ABOUT

Kale Dog Collective is a conceptual project that is trying to decide if it should become something more. Inspired by natural canine behavior, the project was born with equal parts humour and a serious belief that the Kale Bone could indeed be an enjoyable, healthy, and environmentally friendly product for our dear companions to chew on. It exists because of the collective input and interest from you. Everyone who has lent an ear, shared a laugh, and provided feedback on the concept is a part of the Collective making this happen.

So what do you think? Want to join the collective? Let's find out together if this is just a short lived side project for fun, or if it's an idea with real legs (roots?) that should become something more.

Send us your thoughts, maybe buy a sticker, or just mention this all to a friend!

Statement from Kona
Discoverer of the first Kale Bone, co-founder of the Kale Dog Collective

"The dried kale stalk is introduced as a chew toy, inviting contrast with the myriad plastic and polyester toys that litter pet owner's homes and gardens in their panoply of shapes and colors -  while the juxtaposition of their end states highlights the serious issue of plastic pollution, waste, and animal health. With one shedding small bits of plastics, foams, and polyester stuffings into the environment and the dog's own digestive tract, the other gradually breaks down into natural soft wood chips, which pose no risk to the dog's health and are ready to return to, even enrich, the natural environment as biodegradable mulch.

Indeed the entire industry of artificial chew toys exists superimposed upon the natural behaviour of dogs to chew on sticks and bones. They are a forced solution to a non-existent problem, obfuscating the simplicity and elegance of the dog's own natural solution to it's compulsively masticating nature.

Thus the Kale Bone subverts the capitalist dogma of forcing ever new and usually unnecessary solutions (for purchase) on the consumer, while simultaneously playing the capitalist game by presenting as a consumer product for sale alongside truly non-utilitarian goods (i.e. stickers) whose sole purpose is entertainment.

Because at the end of the day, dogs need to chew on stuff, humans need to make a living, and everyone needs to have fun with life!"
